ANDREW CHAN AND MYURAN SUKUMARAN

27 April 2015

Labor believes the Indonesian Government must ensure all legal avenues are exhausted in the cases of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Andrew and Myruan have a case in the constitutional court on the question of clemency and there is an inquiry being conducted by the Indonesian judicial commission in relation to serious allegations, including the sentencing process.

These matters must be fully considered with regard to the rule of law.

We believe it is critical these two Australians are not denied this opportunity.

There is a great sense of injustice because of how these two young men have rehabilitated, and helped so many others do the same.

No one thinks they deserve to escape punishment, but they don't deserve this.

Labor is committed to working closely with the Government on this matter and I’ve spoken to Tony Abbott overnight to reinforce this.

We oppose the death penalty in every circumstance, in every country.
