OPERATION RISING

18 April 2015

Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police have this morning made arrests in Melbourne regarding alleged terrorism-related offences.

These allegations are even more heinous as they relate to ANZAC Day, a day that is hugely significant to Australians and our identity.

I know Australians will not let these events disrupt the commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of the first ANZAC landing in Gallipoli.

Australians should be reassured that our security and police agencies are among the best in the world.

We should be reassured by the skill and professionalism of our security agencies and their ability to tackle the threat of terrorism to keep Australians safe.

When it comes to the security of our nation and keeping people safe, we are all in this together.

Labor supports our national security agencies having the powers they need to keep Australians safe.

Labor will continue our bipartisan approach to the most important responsibility of government - ensuring the safety of Australian citizens.
