Opposition Leader and Member for Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten has congratulated local members of the Victorian Special Olympics Team before the National Games in October.

Meeting athletes and coaches at the Inter-regional Athletics Games in Moonee Ponds, Mr Shorten presented ribbons to the participants and wished them luck for the months ahead.

“This is a fantastic achievement for these athletes, their families and their support networks,” Mr Shorten said.

“Their hard work and dedication has paid off and I’m pleased to be here to acknowledge their efforts.”

Mr Shorten said that the Melbourne West athletes had made a substantial contribution to the state team, with six competitors in track and field, six in swimming and two participating in equestrian events.

“Not only are these athletes representing our state, they are representing our community too and I am sure they will do us proud,” he said.
