Last election I committed federal support to upgrade lighting at out local sports fields. This improvement will allow for more use of our spots fields and allow for increased participation in sports activities across our community. This includes more time available for women's participation is sports such as AFL.
The project will upgrade sports lighting at multiple sports fields within the Moonee Valley City Council area, including:
- Ormond Park,
- Moonee Ponds
- Boeing Reserve -
- Strathmore Heights
- Doyle Street Reserve
- Avondale Heights
- Buckley Park Bowls Facility
- Essendon and Fairbairn Park
- Ascot Vale.
The Federal Government is providing $1.9 million to the $4.04 million project and Moonee Valley City Council is providing the remaining $2.14 million toward the project.
The lights will upgrade non-compliant and/or aging sports lighting infrastructure and install new lighting at sports fields where lighting does not currently exist.
Work on the senior oval at Ormond Park is now complete. This element of the projects involves upgrade of field lighting to 100 lux on the senior Australian rules football oval. Further work on the junior oval will be undertaken in 2025/26 as part of this project.
The main social and economic outcomes/benefits of the project include:
-
- Access to sporting fields that meet current Australian Standards for sports lighting;
- Improved safety for participants; and
- Engagement of local contractors and use of local suppliers wherever possible.
The project is anticipated to support 8 jobs during construction.
