2014: TONY ABBOTT’S YEAR OF BROKEN PROMISES

04 December 2014

Before the last election, Tony Abbott made a lot of promises to the Australian people.

After a year in office, almost every single one of those promises has been broken.

Tony Abbott promised no cuts to health, no cuts to education, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABS or SBS.

He promised no increase to university fees and that university funding arrangements would not change.

He promised to retain the Renewable Energy Target.

He promised to reduce cost of living pressure and make childcare more accessible and affordable.

He promised 1 million new jobs and better support for apprentices.

He also promised that taxes will always be lower under a Coalition government.

He promised to be the Prime Minister for Women and the Prime Minister for Indigenous Affairs.

He promised to lead a government of no surprises and no excuses.

He promised to lead a government that says what it means and does what it says.

Tony Abbott has broken almost every single one these promises to the Australian people, who elected him Prime Minister.

None more so than this commitment from on election night:

“We will not let you down.”

TONY ABBOTT – ELECTION NIGHT SPEECH – 7 SEPTEMBER 2013

Tony Abbott has let Australians down.

This is not the government they said they would be.

2014 may be a year that Tony Abbott would rather forget - but Australians will always remember.

Labor will continue to hold the Abbott Government to account in 2015, as we have in 2014.

But more importantly, Labor will continue to fight the Government’s unfair measures that hurt Australians.

And Labor will put forward a positive vision and policies that protect living standards, jobs and a secure economic future.
