APPOINTMENT OF JUNE OSCAR AS SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMISSIONER - THURSDAY, 9 FEBRUARY 2017

08 February 2017

Labor welcomes the appointment of the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, June Oscar AO.

Ms Oscar is a remarkable woman and a strong leader, who will bring immense credibility to this important national role within Australia’s statutory human rights framework.

As the first woman appointed to this role, Ms Oscar will be an example for women and girls all around the country.

June is not afraid of a fight. Her fierce determination to tackle the scourge of alcohol abuse in Fitzroy Crossing has changed lives. Because of June, more people know about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and more is being done to prevent it.

June is proud, courageous Bunuba woman. She has made a huge difference in her local community and inspired others with her passion and relentless activism. In her new role,  June will make a substantial difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout Australia.

We look forward to working with June and responding to her advice and recommendations with respect to the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
