Labor is urging all Australians to reflect on the right of children to enjoy their childhood and celebrate their talents, skills and abilities during Children’s Week.

 

Children’s Week is celebrated every year in the fourth week of October.

 

This year also marks the 25^th anniversary of Australia’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

 

The theme for Children’s Week 2015 is ‘Children’s Rights are Human Rights’.

 

Kids need to be kids, and it is up to all of us to make sure all children have the opportunity to have fun and be themselves.

 

It takes a concerted effort by everyone in the community to ensure that Australian children grow up in a safe environment, free from domestic and family violence.

 

Governments and the community need to support Australian families to ensure children have adequate housing, a nutritious diet and access to affordable health care.

 

And the Government has an important role in ensuring our children have access to the best possible education and are given every opportunity to succeed in the future. That means making sure that our kindies, child care centres, schools and universities are properly funded.

 

Most importantly, let’s make sure our kids have the opportunity to enjoy being kids, to play, to have fun, be creative, ask questions and show off their talents, skills and abilities.

 

Labor congratulates all of the schools, playgroups, child care centres, kindergartens, cultural groups, libraries and community groups who have organised activities to celebrate this important week.
