While many wrote off the chances of the Labor Party in South Australia months ago, Jay has proven them wrong with a remarkable campaign fought on jobs, health and education.
While the final result in South Australia is not yet clear, the message is. South Australians don’t want to see even more jobs in their state sent overseas. South Australians don’t want a repeat of the Abbott Government’s cuts to health and education.
Jay is a fine leader who fought this campaign with detailed policies and a clear vision for his state. I wish him and his team the best as the count continues over the next few days.
After 16 years of government, it was always going to be a tough fight for Labor in Tasmania. I congratulate Will Hodgman on his emphatic victory. Tasmanians have put their trust in him – he mustn’t let them down. He must stand up for the interests of Tasmanians and not be a rubber stamp for Tony Abbott's agenda.
Lara Giddings and the Labor team in Tasmania have much to be proud of. Tasmania is a stronger, fairer society for their contribution. I am confident Labor will rebuild and be a strong and united opposition – that is what Tasmanians need.
In every city and region, Labor will continue to do what we've done for more than a century – we'll fight for good jobs and fair conditions, we'll protect health and education services, and we'll tackle the big reforms that grow our economy.
