New Medicare analysis has shown that local families will be among the hardest hit by the Abbott Government’s proposed GP Tax, Leader of the Opposition and Member for Maribyrnong Bill Shorten said today.

“In Maribyrnong, where 83.9 per cent of services are bulk billed, a $6 GP Tax could cost local families $4.98 million a year,” Mr Shorten said.

“This is an unprecedented attack on Medicare and yet another broken election promise from Tony Abbott.”

“Before the election, Me Abbott said he wouldn’t bring in any new taxes – but this is a broken promise millions of Australian families won’t forget.”

Mr Shorten said the Abbott Government’s GP Tax would hit the families who could least afford it.

“With a GP Tax, families in Maribyrnong who are already struggling to make ends meet simply won’t be able to afford to see their local doctor.”

“Medicare should be about ensuring that every Australian has access to the healthcare they need - not just the healthcare Tony Abbott says they can afford.”
