The Member for Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten, has encouraged local councils and community groups to apply for grants under the new $40 million National Crime Prevention fund.

The fund, announced on Friday by the Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare, will target crime hotspots, paying for;

·       Grants to local councils for security infrastructure like closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and lighting; and

·       Youth mentoring and outreach programs run by not-for-profit community organisations.

Mr Shorten said that this was a great opportunity for local councils and not-for-profit groups to get added support for local crime prevention projects.

“I am aware that the impact of crime is a major concern for people living and working right across the electorate, from St Albans to Braybrook, Airport West, Maidstone and Strathmore.

“Those on the ground who are working to combat crime, including police, councils and community workers, do a tremendous job.

“This Crime Prevention Fund will help to support their work by funding specific projects that aim to reduce crime in our streets.

Mr Clare said local councils will be able to apply for funding for CCTV and other security infrastructure, which is important in keeping the community safe.

“In addition, not-for-profit groups can apply to fund programs that target young people at risk of falling off the tracks and getting involved in crime,” Mr Clare said.

“As a community we know what will work locally. This program gives us the chance to work together to reduce crime.”

The grants are being funded by assets seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Fund.

Applications for grants will open in the first week of May, and will be open for four weeks. Projects must be completed by the end of June 2015.
