Community gardens, farmers markets and food rescue organisations in Melbourne’s West have been invited to apply for a new $1.5 million food grants program from the Gillard Government.

The Member for Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten, welcomed the announcement that the Community Food Grant program is now open for applications.

“This is an opportunity for not-for-profit groups to bring local communities together to grow, prepare and share food,” Mr Shorten said.

“We know that initiatives like community gardens and farmers’ markets improve food knowledge and help people make healthier choices.

“They also help people form bonds within their communities - especially communities as diverse as those across Maribyrnong.

“Around the country to these local groups are flourishing and these grants support that development,” Mr Shorten said.

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, said the Community Food Grant program was one of the new initiatives announced as part of the National Food Plan released late last month.

“The Community Food Grant program will provide the funding needed to help non-profit groups put great food initiatives and ideas into practice,” Minister Ludwig said.

“By providing the funding to support these food initiatives, we are helping to bridge the gap between farmers and the communities that rely on their contribution to our food system.”

Community Food Grants are open to not-for-profit organisations, including farmers’ markets, food rescue organisations, charities and cooperative societies. Grants of up to $10,000 will be available for community gardens, city farms and similar activities, and up to $25,000 for farmers’ markets, food rescue and similar activities.

“The Gillard Government has a plan for Australian agriculture and the community through strengthening foundations, preparing for the future and creating new opportunities for our primary industries,” Minister Ludwig said.

“The National Food Plan and Community Food Grants are part of that plan. I encourage all eligible organisations to apply and help boost their community’s connection with food.”
