Labor congratulates Donald Trump on his upcoming inauguration to the highest political office in the United States.

America’s values of democracy, freedom and justice are among its greatest strengths – values we in Australia share. 

These democratic principles are on display with the transition of political power in Washington that the inauguration represents. 

America is one of Australia’s closest friends and staunchest allies. This relationship has been one of the central pillars of Australian foreign policy since the end of the second world war and will remain so into the future. 

Labor looks forward to working with President Trump and his new administration to further our two countries’ shared values and interests, and to promote peace and prosperity in our region.

Labor also pays tribute to the service and achievements of President Barack Obama over the last eight years. His grace, moral courage and policy leadership in times of trouble will stand as an example and an inspiration for decades to come.

President Obama will always be a great friend of Australia. The Australian people wish him and his wonderful family every happiness in the future.
