More than 500 jobs and apprenticeships will be up for grabs tomorrow at the Gillard Labor Government Jobs and Skills Expo in Broadmeadows.

The Expo will be held at the Broadmeadows Leisure & Netball Centre between 10am and 3pm, giving locals the chance to meet potential employers, training organisations and industry representatives.

Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations Bill Shorten said the Expo provides employment opportunities for both job seekers and local employers across Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs.

“This one-stop shop for jobs is the place to be for jobs seekers in the area and is a great chance for local jobs seekers to meet with a range of employers in the one location.

“The Gillard Government has established jobs expos as a practical way to help prospective employees and employers connect in their local communities.”

Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr encouraged job seekers to attend the Expo and take advantage of the opportunities on offer.

“We want people to be able to fully participate in society – finding a job or some training can be a good place to start. That’s why we offer real opportunities close to home,” Senator Kim Carr said.

“With 85 exhibitors at the Broadmeadows Expo I encourage all job seekers to come armed with their resumes and take advantage of the unique opportunity to meet a number of employers in a single day.”

The Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos are being held across the country to provide employment and skills training opportunities for areas that continue to do it tough.

Local Member for Calwell Maria Vamvakinou said having a Jobs Expo in Broadmeadows was an important part of the Government’s efforts to keep residents in work. She said since September 2009 the Australian Government had held 50 Expos and more than 19,000 people had been connected with jobs.

“We’re looking to build on that success by continuing to hold Expos through until 2013 and I’m looking forward to seeing the results in Broadmeadows,” Ms Vamvakinou said.
