A Shorten Labor Government will invest more than $120 million in the University of the Sunshine Coast’s new Moreton Bay Campus.
$50 million of Labor’s investment will help build a state-of-the-art super laboratory that will transform the Moreton Bay region into a high tech education hub.
Students will be able to study science, engineering, IT, environmental science, and sports science at the new campus.
This is great news for locals, who will now have the opportunity of a world class uni education right on their doorstep.
It’s about helping prepare Moreton Bay locals for the jobs of the future.
Moreton Bay is a terrific place to live, and work. Labor wants to make it an even better place to study too.
The new campus will be located next to Petrie train station, so students from Caboolture and other parts of Moreton Bay will be able to study at a world class uni without having to travel to Brisbane.
It’s expected that the new Moreton Bay Campus will cater for up to 10,000 students.
The super laboratory project is expected to support 1500 jobs during construction. It will be an impressive seven-storey, 8000 m2 building located on the old Petrie Paper Mill site.
The super laboratory project will include:
- New science super laboratories
- Digital laboratories with research-level equipment
- Energy and water laboratories
- School experience centre, including an environmental research lab and field station
- Teaching facilities
The Moreton Bay Campus will work closely with schools in the area to provide exciting learning opportunities and support students who aspire to study at uni.
Malcolm Turnbull has put an unfair cap on the number of students they will fund to go to the Moreton Bay Campus.
In contrast, Labor will guarantee funding for every single Australian undergraduate student enrolled at the Moreton Bay Campus. That’s about a $70 million commitment over the first three years alone.
Unlike the Liberals, Labor believes the University of the Sunshine Coast should be supported to enrol as many qualified students as wish to attend the new Moreton Bay Campus.
We pay tribute to the leadership of the Labor candidate for Longman, Susan Lamb, the Labor candidate for Petrie, Corinne Mulholland, the Labor candidate for Dickson, Ali France, and the Moreton Bay Regional Mayor, Allan Sutherland, who have been tremendous advocates for this project.
Labor knows that nine in ten jobs created in the coming years will need a uni or TAFE qualification.
We want the Moreton Bay region to have a strong economy, and secure, decently paid jobs.

When it comes to education, the Liberals never learn: they cut schools, cut TAFE, and cut unis.
