Grassroots sport in Tasmania’s North-West and West Coasts will be given a boost with a Shorten Labor Government investing $350,000 towards modernising the West Park Sports Facility.

With a capacity of around 12,000 people, West Park is the biggest oval in the region, and one of the most important sports facilities in the state.

It is the home of the Burnie Dockers Football Club, Burnie Hurricanes Cricket Club, the Burnie Cycling Club and the Burnie Athletics Club, and attracts competitors from around the country at the annual New Year’s Day Burnie Gift.

Labor’s $350,000 investment will go towards upgrading facilities to better support girls and women’s participation in sport and the installation of a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard

Critically, the installation of the electronic scoreboard will mean Burnie can host a nationally-broadcast Women’s Big Bash League game. 

Federal Labor’s $350,000 investment comes on top of an existing $50,000 commitment from the Burnie Council. Now it’s time for the Hodgman State Government to come to the table – next week’s state budget must commit to the remaining $100,000 to fund these upgrades.

Generations of North-West Tasmanians have grown up learning sport, playing sport, and watching sport at West Park – and Labor will ensure future generations have these same opportunities.
