Analysis from the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) shows that Maribyrnong households will be $501.5 worse off every year as a result of the Abbott Government’s Budget.
Leader of the Opposition and Member for Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten said that the report demonstrated the Budget’s impact on the most vulnerable in the community.
“In Braybrook, for example, families are expected to be around $1091.9 worse off. That’s simply $1091.9 they can’t afford to lose,” he said.
“Local families are already struggling with the cost of living. This report shows that under Tony Abbott’s GP tax, petrol tax and cuts to pensions and assistance, life will just get harder.”
Bill Shorten said the NATSEM report mirrored the concerns of the community regarding the unfairness of the Budget.
“In speaking with local residents, many are genuinely concerned about how they are going to afford to pay the bills and put food on the table,” he said.
“This Budget is just putting more pressure on pensioners, more pressure on low and middle income families and more pressure on our young people.”
