The Australian Labor Party has lost a giant.
Few are made as tough, as smart and as honourable as Neville Wran.
After 1975, the Wranslides helped rebuild Labor in New South Wales and nationally. It was Neville who kept the light on the hill burning bright.
Neville reached his state’s highest office but never forgot his humble beginnings.
Neville transformed New South Wales Labor and remade New South Wales but never lost sight of the values that inspired him: helping the vulnerable and making his state a more caring and fair place.
He was a Premier of the utmost integrity, and a thoroughly decent man.
Balmain boys, we are told, don’t cry. But all those who knew Neville Wran, and admired him, may well shed a tear in his memory.
Federal Labor offers our most heartfelt condolences to all those Neville loved, and all those who loved him.
After a life dedicated to the service of others, may he now rest in peace.
