NEW MEMBERS OF THE LABOR SHADOW EXECUTIVE
I’m very pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to Labor’s shadow executive team including the creation of the new position of Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Western Australia.
After a ballot of the Labor caucus, Member for Throsby Stephen Jones was today elected to the Shadow Ministry. I have appointed Stephen to the position of Assistant Shadow Minister for Health.
I have also appointed Member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan to the new position of Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Western Australia and as Shadow Parliamentary for Regional Development and Infrastructure.
Stephen Jones will work with Shadow Health Minister Catherine King to protect the things that Labor has spent generations building – Medicare, a universal health system and investment in preventative health.
Stephen will help us take up the fight to the Abbott Government over their new GP Tax, their cuts to public health bodies, and their botched decision to pull down the Health Star Rating website.
As a lifelong resident of the Wollongong region, Stephen understands more than most the different health challenges facing regional communities. I’ve asked Stephen to make this issue a particular focus of his work.
Alannah MacTiernan is a fantastic Member for Perth and I have no doubt she’ll be an excellent representative for the whole state in the new position of Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Western Australia.
Alannah is well known and well respected throughout Western Australia. As Infrastructure Minister in successive WA governments, she earned a reputation as a straight shooter who gets things done.
Alannah will always put Westerns Australians first – and she’ll fight Colin Barnett and Tony Abbott’s cuts to health, education and jobs.
While Western Australia has always had strong representation in Federal Labor, this new position that I’ve created will make WA’s voice inside Labor even stronger.
