PETER GRESTE FREED

01 February 2015

Peter Greste’s release from detention in Egypt is wonderful news.

The thoughts of all Australians have been with Peter, his family and friends throughout this terrible ordeal. Today, our nation shares their relief.

As we've said from the beginning, being a journalist is not a crime.

Journalists shouldn’t be put on trial or locked up for doing their job.

The Greste family have requested privacy for Peter. We ask that their wishes be respected.

Labor commends the outstanding Australian diplomats who have worked so hard on this matter.

We continue to urge for the release Peter’s two colleagues, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy.

Our thoughts are also with the hundreds of journalists around the world who remain imprisoned. So long as their freedom is diminished, so too is our own.
