The Australian Labor Party congratulates John Key and thanks him for his generous service and commitment to the alliance between our two countries.

During John’s tenure Australia and New Zealand have worked side by side on the battlefield, during times of natural disaster and global economic challenge. Australia is fortunate to have New Zealand as a steadfast ally and friend.

The friendship between our two great nations transcends ideology, political beliefs and even sporting contests.

To end such a long and distinguished political career at a time of one’s own choosing is a rare achievement. 

In an age of political turbulence, John Key leaves on his own terms. As ever, he is thinking about the future. 

We wish John, Bronagh and their family all the very best for the next chapter of their lives.
