More people with severe mental illness, their families and carers in Brimbank will have greater access to support services and other practical help close to home thanks to a million dollar boost from the Gillard Government.

The Member for Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten, and the Member for Gorton, Brendan O’Connor, announced that Break Thru People Solutions will get $1.2 million to boost mental health services in Melbourne’s West.

Break Thru People Solutions is a not-for-profit organisation which offers a range of employment services to jobseekers, including specialist psychiatric and disability services.

Federal Member for Maribyrnong Bill Shorten today visited Break Thru’s office in St Albans and met with staff.

“This organisation provides vital services to the people of Melbourne’s west, and it was fantastic to be given a glimpse of the work they are doing on the ground,” Mr Shorten said.

Mr O’Connor said the new funding will help provide support for people caring for those with mental health issues across Brimbank, Hume, Whittlesea, Darebin and Nillumbik local government areas.

“These services will give families of people with a mental illness in Brimbank greater access to flexible respite and support services over the next five years,” Mr O’Connor said.

“We know how important it is to support carers and families of people with mental illness.”

Mr Shorten said the new service will provide welcome short breaks to mental health carers, allowing them to participate more broadly in community life.

“It will give them a far greater opportunity to take part in community and social activities, engage in peer support groups and education, or receive counselling and advice, all contributing to their own health and wellbeing.”

Mr O’Connor said the new services are part of the Government’s record $2.2 billion national mental health reforms.

“This funding is vital to support people living with mental illness and their carers, and the Gillard Government is committed to improving outcomes for Australians who are facing these challenges.”
